Foam ≠ Clean!

In RADIUS on June 20, 2018 at 2:28 pm

Most people assume that a foam is necessary when brushing their teeth. However, equating foaminess with cleanliness is all in your mind – put there by years of shampoo commercials showing people having the time of their lives while washing suds out of their hair.

The truth of the matter is that foam is typically caused by chemicals! Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is one of the most common foaming agents added to dental products. These nasty chemicals are added to your shampoo or toothpaste just to make it foam. It’s not necessarily cleaning any better, it’s just making you think it is. Now don’t get us wrong, there are also natural ways to make foam but those products (like our toothpaste) will have low foam. A super frothy lather is most likely chemically induced.

When we were formulating our organic toothpastes, we thought a lot about foam. It goes without saying that we would never include any chemicals, but we did think about the fact that people like foam because it makes them feel cleaner. It may be a mindset, but it’s a mindset that people enjoy, and we’re all about adding joy to the mundane tasks of daily life.

We researched many different natural and organic foaming ingredients and ultimately decided on Quillaja Saponaria Wood Extract – a mouthful to say, we know! It causes a low, natural foam and is completely safe. This extract has a long history of medicinal use with Andean people, who used it especially as a treatment for various chest problems.

Stick to clean without chemicals!

RADIUS Goes Back to School

In In the News, RADIUS on June 13, 2018 at 10:57 am

Back in February, our Director of Operations Justen Scholl went back to first grade. Mrs. Hand at Kutztown Elementary asked Justen to visit her first grade class to explain how toothbrushes are made in honor of Dental Awareness Month. The students were then assigned a project to create a unique dog toothbrush design and prototype. This idea was inspired by our Organic Canine Dental Solutions Kit!

The students worked together in small groups to come up with their very own design and then visited RADIUS on June 7th to present their ideas to the RADIUS team. The results are as cute as they are clever!

The students explained to us how they worked together to come up with their one-of-a-kind product, how it works, and why it’s better than a regular dog toothbrush!

1stgrade-2018(11)

This toothbrush prototype has bacon on the handle because all dogs love bacon, amirite?

1stgrade-2018(6)

This group had an amazing idea to make their dog toothbrush resemble a lollipop, because what pup is going to pass up on a sucker?

After the kids presented their ideas to our team, they got the chance to see up close how our toothbrushes are made! Justen showed them our bristling machines, how we package our products, and how we ship them.

Thank you to Kutztown Elementary, Mrs. Hand, Mr. Hand, and Mr. Simmons for visiting us here at RADIUS and giving us the opportunity to hear some awesome new ideas. Who knows? Maybe you’ll see one of these designs on the shelf one day!  😉

Ben Franklin and His Crazy Socks

In In the News, RADIUS on May 23, 2017 at 9:17 am

In March, the Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Northeastern Pennsylvania announced their winners of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Innovation Awards, naming RADIUS the victor of the Innovative Application of Technology category.

The Innovative Application of Technology award highlights a company that strongly demonstrates a “break-the-mold” approach to integrating new or existing technology into its business. Ben Franklin recently published an award press release with the following company description explaining why RADIUS was honored with the Innovative Application of Technology award.

RADIUS designs and manufactures premium personal care products including eco-friendly toothbrushes, molded travel cases, dental floss, and organic toothpastes. The completely solar-powered, certified woman-owned company is committed to ongoing R&D to identify innovative and sustainable manufacturing approaches to make everyday products distinctive. Its Source Toothbrush uses replacement head technology with a handle made from recycled dollar bills, paper, and wood, reducing waste by 93%. Through Ben Franklin funding and connections, RADIUS received marketing and strategy support, teamed with the Plastics Manufacturing Center at Penn College to address a breakage problem with toothbrushes, and more recently worked with Lehigh University’s Enterprise Systems Center on facility optimization. Since last year, RADIUS has increased employment from 30 to 35 and in the past five years’ company revenue has increased by 3½ times. RADIUS will soon purchase, renovate, and relocate into a larger building to respond to burgeoning demand.

The purposes of the innovation awards are to recognize winners for their success and achievement, to highlight the effectiveness of the Ben Franklin program, and to inform entrepreneurs and established manufacturers about the resources that are available to them in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Awards were presented to seven recipients, companies or individuals who have achieved business success through Ben Franklin funding and assistance, have helped others to achieve success, or have improved their businesses through innovation. Each award recipient exemplifies outstanding achievement in that category.

Winners were honored at the Ben Franklin iXchange event on Tuesday, May 9th at the Zoellner Arts Center at Lehigh University, Bethlehem PA.

The award presentation was followed by a keynote presentation by Dustin Garis focusing on Disruptive Innovation. Preceded by a surprise (and rather impressive) break dancing performance, Dustin – who after graduating college, decided to turned down multiple job offers and travel the world instead – encouraged guests to break of out their routines to stimulate innovation. Dustin pointed out that autopilot doesn’t inspire creativity, which is an interesting idea considering 90% of our daily activity is exactly the same every day. Dustin told guests to rebel and break the mold and one small way to “revolt against routine” was to wear crazy socks. Ben Franklin staff, award winners, and other guests were encouraged to wear the craziest socks they could find to the iXchange event. Wearing a dress? Who cares? Wear those crazy socks with heels and pride. Revolt against the routine.

A New, Fresh & Light Toothpaste Formula

In RADIUS on February 24, 2017 at 1:59 pm

new-formula-article-header

If you’ve used our organic toothpaste in the past, you may have noticed a few subtle changes recently. We know, that’s a bad word. “Change” isn’t a word most people like to hear, but we can assure you that not all change is bad. In fact, the changes that we made are good and only increase the awesome-ness of our toothpaste.

We simply wanted to offer a much lighter, smoother toothpaste so we decided to make a few minor tweaks to our formula that organically enhances the taste, texture, and your overall brushing experience.

Now made in the USA

Now just like our toothbrushes and accessories, our organic toothpastes are now made in the good ol’ US of A.

Addition of organic chamomile flower

Not just for tea drinkers, soothing chamomile can also help ease gum inflammation and its antimicrobial properties can act as a natural preservative.

Increased organic aloe

We upped the aloe to offer more of its cooling, antibacterial, and antiviral properties which can help fight tooth decay.

Light, natural foam

No, it’s not SLS or SLES…it’s organic soapberry. Used in oral medications in traditional Chinese medicine, the soapberry is a natural foaming agent and has antibacterial properties.

Have no fear, our toothpastes are still USDA certified organic, vegan, and nasty ingredient-free. We hold those characteristics near and dear to our hearts and promise to never let them go.

RADIUS Goes Rafting

In RADIUS on July 12, 2016 at 9:29 am

On Thursday July 7th, the RADIUS Crew spent their annual Team Day on the Lehigh River. We loaded up and drove an hour north to the picturesque mountain town of Jim Thorpe, PA where we joined guides from Whitewater Rafting Adventures and learned how to tame the rapids.

Here’s our adventure…
