Take a Tour of RADIUS

In RADIUS on May 18, 2016 at 7:22 pm

This is where we design, create, manufacture, and bring our innovative products to life. Take a tour of our historic factory and HQ and get an inside look at what makes RADIUS tick.

A USA Factory Powered by Sunshine

We put as much thought into the making of RADIUS® products as we do the design of them.

Almost 30 years ago, we bought and renovated a historic feed mill in Kutztown, Pennsylvania not far from the storied steel plants of Bethlehem.

We make, package and ship all our products from this facility in small batches, keeping complete control over production from start to finish to ensure quality stays up to our standards – the best of the best.

In March 2011, we went a step further, installing a 50,000 Kilowatt solar-panel
system on the factory roof. Each year since, RADIUS has been able to generate enough electricity to power roughly 15 homes straight from the Pennsylvania sun, offsetting 210 metric tons of carbon, the equivalent of 45 acres of healthy trees. Thanks to ultra-efficient machinery and savvy production schedules, solar power accounts for more than 67%, or more than two-thirds, of electricity at the RADIUS plant.

We might be a small company, but our efforts are big in this right. To compare, Wal-Mart has 335 renewable energy projects in operation or under development, however, solar power still only accounts for about 25% of its electricity. While commercial solar projects are typically concentrated in sunnier climates like those of California and Arizona or states with major incentive programs, like Massachusetts, we make every one of our panels count.

We’re almost as proud of our plant as we are of its products. Clean teeth and clean air – our stock in trade.

Do Healthy Gums Mean A Healthy Heart?

February is American Heart Month

Having a strong oral care regimen doesn’t only result in a bright, shiny smile – it can also help maintain a healthy heart. According to a statement released in 2012 from the American Heart Association® there’s an unexplained correlation between gum disease and heart disease. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women and accounts for 1 out of every 4 deaths in the United States while approximately 47% adults in the US have some form of gum disease.

Gum disease is caused by an excess of plaque buildup along or below the gum line. It’s more commonly known as gingivitis during the early stages and periodontal disease during the late stages and according to the Academy of General Dentistry™ (AGD), people who have chronic gum disease are more at risk for a heart attack. Some studies have suggested that gum disease can lead to heart disease because bacteria from infected gums can enter the bloodstream and increase clot formation by attaching to blood vessels. Clots decrease blood flow to the heart which can cause an elevated blood pressure, increasing the risk for a heart attack.

According to the American Dental Association® (ADA) there are 7 warning signs of gum disease:

  1. Gums that bleed easily
  2. Gums that are red, swollen or tender
  3. Gums that have pulled away from the teeth
  4. Constant bad breath or taste
  5. Loose or separating permanent teeth
  6. Any change in the “bite” of your teeth or the way they fit together when you bite down
  7. Any change in the fit of partial dentures

While there isn’t enough evidence to suggest that healthy gums will completely prevent heart attacks, having a strong oral care regimen can help reduce your risk of heart disease and many other conditions.

Make sure you’re following these 4 simple steps from the ADA to maintain a healthy mouth and body:

  1. Brush 2x daily
  2. Floss at least once a day
  3. Eat a balanced diet, limiting sugary foods and between-meal snacks
  4. Visit your dentist regularly for examinations and cleanings

5 Ways to Prevent Kids’ Tooth Decay

BPA_CURRENT

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month and the American Dental Association® has 5 tips for keeping your child’s smile bright and shiny.

  1. Don’t Share. – It may cause more dishes but avoid using the same spoon as your child. Sharing utensils or drinking from the same cup can transfer cavity-causing germs.
  2. Eat Healthy – Eating fruits and veggies doesn’t just help your child grow big and strong – it also helps their teeth fight off decay. In fact, the first signs of poor nutrition often show up as cavities. According to MyPlate, fruits and veggies should cover half of your child’s plate.
  3. Meet the Dentist Early – According to the ADA, your child should have their first dental visit no later than 1 year old.
  4. Seal of Approval – Ask your dentist about applying a dental sealant to their teeth. Sealants can help protect against decay.
  5. Two is the Magic Number – Make sure you start brushing your child’s teeth as soon as they poke through the gums. When they can brush teeth on their own, have them brush for 2 minutes 2x per day.

Keep up with your children’s growth stages by using the RADIUS Children’s line of toothbrushes. BPA-free and age-specific the Pure Baby®, Totz®, Totz Plus™, and Kidz® Toothbrushes are designed with your child’s health and smile in mind.

Happy National Dental Hygiene Month!

In RADIUS on October 1, 2015 at 5:42 pm

If, like most people, you perform your oral care regimen on autopilot, then National Dental Hygiene Month is the perfect opportunity to stop, examine and maybe even improve your daily routine.

The American Dental HygienistsAssociation (ADHA) defines four core steps for complete protection against tooth decay and gum disease — AKA The Daily Four:

1. Brush Twice a Day, Every Day

Brushing teeth and gums is the most important method for reducing plaque and preventing cavities, gingivitis and other plaque-related diseases.

Dental experts know that when it comes to brush bristles, softer equals better. RADIUS® toothbrushes boast finer, longer, softer bristles that reach every nook and cranny of your mouth while massaging the gums, rather than aggravating them like harder brushes. Bonus: using a RADIUS  toothbrush feels so good you’ll want to brush for more than the recommended two minutes.

2. Make Flossing a Daily Habit

“Interdental” cleaning of those tricky-to-reach spots between teeth is important for ensuring there aren’t any hidden layers of plaque or pieces of food — ticking time bombs that can spell problems down the road.

RADIUS® makes two types of floss: A glossy biodegradable silk, and a pliable vegan-friendly nylon. The latter is coated with naturally sourced, tree-based xylitol (which prevents bacteria and reduces acidity while adding a hint of sweetness), and it comes in two delicious flavors, each with bonus oral health-boosting properties — antibacterial cranberry and antiseptic mint tea tree.

3. Rinse With an Anti-Microbial Mouth Wash

Brushing and flossing alone can only cover so much ground, but following those steps with a quick swill of anti-microbial mouth rinse will eliminate germs and plaque throughout the whole mouth, for complete protection.

Look for an antiseptic mouthwash which displays the ADA Seal of Acceptance on its packaging, or talk to your dentist for a recommendation.

4. Chew Sugar-Free Gum Between Meals

Every time you eat or drink, the bacteria in plaque begin to produce acid, which can contribute to demineralization and even decay.

While it’s certainly not convenient to brush your teeth after every meal or snack, chewing a piece of sugar-free gum will tide you over until bedtime. It stimulates the salivary glands — washing away stubborn food particles and neutralizing acid to help keep your teeth strong and cavity-free.

RADIUS® loves Glee Gum — a naturally delicious chewing gum made with sustainably harvested rainforest chicle and sweetened with Xylitol, just like our cranberry and mint tea tree flosses.
