Avoid These 9 Foods. Your Teeth Will Thank You.

It’s no secret that a balanced and nutritious diet is the key to a healthy life. Our daily food choices can impact everything from our hair and skin to even our teeth. According to the American Dental Association®, eating healthy plays a huge role in preventing tooth decay and gum disease and if you have less than stellar nutrition the first signs will often show up in your mouth.

In honor of National Nutrition Month, here are 9 foods that you should definitely avoid if you want to keep your smile glowing.

  1. Candy – Most candy is chock-full of sugar and constant exposure can cause cavities. Not to mention, hard candies can cause broken or chipped teeth. What’s a better alternative? Try sugarless gum instead. We personally recommend the naturally delicious Glee Gum. Say hi to our friends at Glee for us.
  2. Ice – How bad can ice be? It’s just water, right? Well, ice is just water so it’s not the nutritional value of ice that’s concerning but rather the fact that it can chip your teeth. Chewing on ice and other hard foods can damage your enamel and cause you to take an unwanted trip to the emergency dentist. Our advice? Skip the ice chewing and enjoy old fashioned liquid water instead.
  3. Citrus – Listen, we love freshly picked oranges just as much as the next person but unfortunately oranges and their citrus brothers and sisters are highly acidic. Too much exposure to acidic foods can erode enamel making your teeth more susceptible to decay. Not to mention, citrus fruits and juices can irritate mouth sores.
  4. Coffee – You might have to find another morning pick-me-up because coffee and tea, while in their natural form can be healthy beverages, are not the greatest for your teeth when you add sugar and all of the other popular add-ins. Caffeinated coffee and tea can also dry out your mouth and frequent coffee drinkers may have to deal with stained teeth. Advice? If you can’t make it through the day without your cup of Joe, drink plenty of water and keep the cream and sugar add-ons to a minimum.
  5. Sticky Foods – While dried fruit might sound like the perfect healthy snack, you need be careful because sticky foods, like dried fruit tends to be, can stay on the teeth longer than any other food types. Make sure you rinse with water after eating and brush and floss carefully. Our Floss Sachets are perfect for on-the-go flossing, just sayin’.
  6. Crunchy Foods – Sometimes there’s nothing more satisfying than hearing the crunch of a potato chip, am I right? But unfortunately potato chips and other crunchy foods are usually a) not at all a healthy snack and b) filled with starch which can get trapped in your teeth. If you do decide to snack on these crunchtastic treats, make sure you floss to remove the food particles that can lead to plaque build-up. For a healthy alternative check out The 21 Best Organic “Junk Foods” by Rodale’s Organic Life.
  7. Soda – It doesn’t matter if you call it “soda” or “pop”, soda pop can be bad for your teeth and overall health. When you eat sugary foods or sip on sugary drinks, plaque bacteria use that sugar to produce acids that attack your enamel. Most sodas and carbonated beverages are acidic, can dry out your mouth, and are full of sugar so they can be an overall death trap for your teeth. Even diet soda drinkers aren’t out of the clear as some studies suggest that diet soda is actually worse for your health when compared to non-diet soda. Many diet soft drinks contain potentially harmful artificial sweeteners such as aspartame. You can learn about the dangers of aspartame here. Our advice? Drink water instead.
  8. Alcohol – A glass of bubbly now and then is fine but alcohol can cause dehydration and dry mouth. Excessive alcohol consumption can reduce saliva flow which can lead to tooth decay and other oral infections such as gum disease. Also heavy alcohol use can increase the risk for mouth cancer. So we’re sticking to the “everything is better in moderation” motto.
  9. Sports Drinks – You just spent the last hour exercising and what’s the first thing you do when you’re done? Take a long drink from your favorite sports drink, right? While these drinks might help to re-hydrate, their top ingredient is almost always sugar. Which is bad news for your teeth and your workout because after spending an hour on the treadmill, the last thing you want to do is ruin it by drinking a bottle of sugar. Water is our drink of choice. No sugar AND it re-hydrates.

In In the News on January 15, 2015 at 10:35 am

RADIUS was mentioned in the New York Times last week!

Anna Rabinowicz, designer and founder of RabLabs, collects toothbrushes and currently has around 40 toothbrushes in her collection, including RADIUS!

“Online, she chose a toothbrush invented by Radius more than 30 years ago that she has collected in multiple colors. “You can choose a left-hand or a right-hand design, which is unusual, and the thumb goes in a very specific spot,” she said.”

No, Seriously…We’re Happy Just to be Nominated

Have you ever watched the Oscars, Grammys, or any other award show and thought, “Yea right, I’m sure they’re just happy to be nominated. I don’t believe that for a second?” Well, we’re hear to tell you that being happy just to be nominated can actually happen.

RADIUS was nominated for the Martha Stewart American Made Award (which was super awesome in and of itself) and then imagine our excitement when we come to find out that out of hundreds of entries in our Style category we were a chosen finalist!

We work really hard to make our company and the products that we produce the best that they can be and to have that recognized in such a big way was a huge honor.

The winners were chosen on Friday October 17th and, sadly, RADIUS did not win. Are we a little disappointed? Of course, but we knew the competition was steep and all the companies who did win were well-deserving and we couldn’t be more excited for them. As cliché as it sounds, we were really  honored to be included in such an exclusive group of companies and we congratulate each and every one of them.

Now, with only a few more months left in 2014, we’re looking forward to 2015 and all the the things that it can bring. If we’re nominated again next year hopefully we’ll win, but if not, make no mistake… we’ll still be happy just to be nominated.

To each and every person who voted for us, we thank you so much for your support! We’ll see you again next year.

Glee Gum Makes RADIUS Positively Gleeful!

In RADIUS, RADIUS Reviews It! on June 23, 2014 at 3:50 pm

It’s no surprise that here at RADIUS we’re all about teeth. Our teeth and overall oral health are pretty important to us. Which is why when we’re sitting in our beautiful HQ in Kuztown, PA dreaming up more ways to bring environmentally friendly oral care to the masses, we chew Glee Gum. We’ve always been big fans of Glee Gum, not only because they have an amazing product that is all natural and tastes pretty amazing, but also because we prefer to support like-minded companies. RADIUS and Glee Gum are both dedicated to providing quality products that are environmentally and socially responsible. So when the opportunity was presented for us to partner with Glee Gum and host a Facebook contest where one lucky participant will win a one year supply of RADIUS Floss Sachets & Sugar-Free Glee Gum, we jumped at the chance.

The folks at Glee Gum were also nice enough to send everyone at RADIUS an assortment of their Sugar-Free Gum and we thought that this would be the perfect opportunity to let everyone know WHY we love Glee!

Our Inside Sales Team couldn’t wait to try the New Wild Watermelon flavor that Glee Gum now offers.

“I love all of the flavors, but my absolute favorite is the Wild Watermelon!” exclaims Chrissy, our Inside Sales Manager.

“My two favorites were the Mint and the Watermelon, but if I had to choose, I would have to say Wild Watermelon is my favorite.” agrees Jen, an Inside Sales Rep. “I also  love the mini Glee Gum boxes! They’re perfect for putting in your purse!”

“I really like how Glee Gum is aspartame, saccharin, cyclamate free.” Donna, an Inside Sales Rep explains. “I brought a few packs of Glee Gum home to my family and my children went crazy! They tried each flavor, loved them all, and have been chewing Glee Gum ever since!”

image (3)“I just really love this gum!” Lucinda our Product Manager was eager to tell us. “The first thing I noticed is that each flavor smells amazing when you open the package, so you automatically know it’s going to taste great too. I honestly can’t pick one flavor I like the best because I like them all, but I really enjoyed the Lemon Lime. I also really appreciate the fact that Glee Gum is made without any harmful additives and is made in the USA.”

Our Shipping & Production Assistant is a huge fan of the Wild Watermelon, but it’s the packaging that had her family really excited. “I took some Glee Gum home for my family to try and my mom fell in love with the packaging. She loves Glee Guy! Once they got over how awesome the packaging was, they decided they really like the Mint the best!”

Our entire Production Team (total of 15) were super excited to try out Glee Gum and kept a stash in the RADIUS break room to chew when not on the floor assembling all of our toothbrushes. Everyone had their favorite flavor, but, after a quick poll, the most popular was the Wild Watermelon!

“It’s a box of Glee!” our Social Marketing & PR person Amanda announced when the shipment of Glee Gum arrived at RADIUS. “I’m a huge fan of Glee Gum and was a Mint user for quite some time, but after trying the new Wild Watermelon flavor I think I’ve found a new favorite! I’ve always really appreciated that this gum is non-GMO, vegetarian, and does not contain artificial sweeteners like aspartame, but I also love how Glee Gum is environmentally responsible. They use chicle in their gum base which helps support the rainforest and I absolutely love their Tree to Glee program where Glee will plant a tree in Central America for every documented box of gum that is purchased. We try to do as much as we can as a company to make our products and manufacturing process environmentally friendly, so it’s really great to partner with a company that has the same goals.”

Saskia our fearless leader and CEO couldn’t decide which flavor she liked best. “I love the flavors! They’re so good that I wish the flavor would last forever!” Since Saskia is heavily involved in the RADIUS product design process she really appreciates companies that go the extra mile to make quality, socially, and environmentally responsible products. “Glee Gum and RADIUS have quite a few things in common. Our Vegan Mint and Cranberry Flosses contain gum-benefiting, USA-Sourced Xylitol just like their Sugar-Free Gum. It also really impresses me that Glee Gum is the first Fair Trade gum in the world and that they manufacture in the USA. We manufacture our products in the US and it’s wonderful to see other companies succeed that have the ambition.”

Review in Review:

Simply put, RADIUS loves Glee Gum! But, by an overwhelming majority, our favorite flavor is Wild Watermelon!
